I am a Canon Digital Rebel XTi user and I am currently using a Quantaray 18-200mm 3.5-6.3 lens and I am ready to graduate so a little more sophisticated lens. I have been asked several times to take pictures for different events of friends and church and my goal is to begin portraiture photography. Since my budget is tight, I am looking at purchasing a Canon EF 50MM 1.8 lens, but I would like to get other opinions of what I should purchase next. Also if you have the Canon EF 50MM 1.8 lens, I would like to hear about your experience.
Thank you

Hi Lisa! The 50mm 1.8 would definitely not be suitable for those sorts of photos :( Events photography (like weddings) would require a zoom lens which is also ‘fast’ (wide open aperture. exe max f/stop 5.6 is not fast enough). Unfortunately, this is an expensive lens like the 70-200mm 2.5 which costs about £800 :( That’s my next lens. The next best thing is the same lens you have, but adding some added flash power like a Speedlite you can bounce off the walls. Check back for Reader question Wed tomorrow it should be useful for you :)
