Glow Effect in Elements

Today’s question has come from Sami T.:

Q. I have always wanted to know how you do the bright lighting effect like you did to Kelsey’s photo in todays Reader Photo Friday how it looks just angelic. a lot of people use the effect and i do not know how. I use PSE8 because I can’t figure out my CS4.

A. Oh wow great question! This is one of the first tricks I learned in PSE when I started editing photos. It’s really simple.

  1. Start with your image
  2. In the layers pallette, right click and duplicate the background image
  3. Use the ‘overlay’ or ‘soft light’ mode and adjust the opacity until it looks right
  4. Then with the top layer selected, go to filter –> blur –> gaussian blur and move the blur slider until you like the glow on your photo. You can see it changing as you move the slider.

That’s it!

Awesome! I love the effect I got when I did this! Thanks for sharing!

I feel like a total dork (since I am), but I can’t figure out how to get to the overlay or soft light mode. I’m using PSE6 for Mac, and as I’m sure you can guess, I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Love your blog.

Never mind! I’m feeling even sillier now that I’ve figured it out!

Thanks. I love all your tips.

I have CS4 not PSE so when I tried these steps, it didn’t work. The first step with the soft light worked, but then adding the blur didn’t work…it did not show up when I flattened the layers. Is there a different technique for PS than PSE?
