My First Stab at Stage Photography – Canon 7D

Whew! I think I just barely made it through this one by the skin of my teeth. I learned so so much last night shooting my first stage event! First, I would never do it again without a fast zoom lens (like a 70-200mm 2.8). Also, the 7D (as with any camera). Is nothing it promises to be in regards to noise. I was only at 1250 ISO but the noise was outrageous. Funny that in the ads, they always show the noise comparison shots in an idea environment, never in one where a high ISO would actually be used like a concert. But anyway, it was fun and I’m happy with the results! What do you think?

I think they turned out really good. I don’t see the noise you speak of, what did you end up doing to get so much light? OCL?
    Tell us more!
This kind of shooting know how would come in handy for mums w/ kids in plays…

I just whacked up the noise reduction slider in LR :)

These are great. I have been trying the same myself of late with the 7D and totally agree about the noise issue. Are other cameras the same ? Even with a fast lens the noise can ruin a shot. These photos look perfect though.

Hey everyone, I think you did really well Elizabeth
David ? I photographed my daughters ballet school end of year concert on an eos40Dcamera body and the 2.8 70-200mm and thought it was too noisy for my liking, but others thought it was great. This yr i am ready with the 5Dmrk11 and wont know for sure just how good it is until in that position I guess.

Elizabeth, they look great and I love the colors. We’ve been looking into upgrading to a 50d or 7d, but were concerned about the noise, so now we’re considering a used full frame. Any experience with full frame cameras and their noise levels? Just wondering if they live up to their less-noisy reputations!

Those shots are great! I know everyone of my pictures would be blurry if I tried that

What was your ISO on these? My camera maxes out at 1600.
