My image release

Note: I’m not a lawyer (surprise!) so this isn’t -like- official legal advice, m’kay? You can go here for that. She’s rather good.

Just like your business, mine is constantly evolving. I’ve written about my image release before but it’s been a while and much has changed. I’ve learned so many things the hard way. For instance, if you don’t specify what photos the release is for, what’s stopping them from saying it’s for that other session they had but didn’t purchase the rights to? So here’s a no holds barred view of the actual release I include on my clients’ flash drive of images:

Thank you for the new and improved image release! I shall take it to heart and use it to improve mine. Thank you once again!

Elizabeth thanks for the example of the release. Do you know if there is any way to restrict where the client can get the images printed? Assuming your work would look better if printed at a professional print house compared to the local Drug Store or some big box store. Any thoughts?

Hi Darren! Yes this is perhaps one of the most frustrating results of handing over our work. Also in the flash drive, I have a printing guide with the image you see below (I call the file “read_me.pdf”). It has a link to their gallery already uploaded on SmugMug so they can print through my printing company. And then I also verbally direct them to reading the documents and briefly explain why they should print through the link on their flash drive.

  • I haven’t done this (the image of pro/high street printers) but it’s a great idea. 99% of people I speak to seem to have no clue there’s a difference (or that it would ever be so substantial.

  • Curious about the grammar. You are using copyright first as singular (which I’m pretty sure is correct) and then as plural. Is there a reason for this?

Thanks for that. I am trying “again” to get into Photography. (had a baby so took some time away) Anyway I never thought of this. Great advice :)
